BUS, SCHOOL BUS AND MOTORCOACH LITIGATION
Over the last decade the transportation industry has evolved instituting innovative ideas in public and private forms of transportation. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, buses and motorcoaches still log an average of 28 billion passenger miles annually, still making them a viable choice of transportation. Bus and motorcoach transportation encompasses a number of categories including mass public transportation, chartered buses and school buses to name a few. The rules and regulations that bus and motorcoach companies must follow are enforced by the Department of Transportation ("DOT"). The appropriate regulatory agency within the DOT depends upon the category of transportation.

When regulations and safety measures are not followed, catastrophic accidents can occur, leaving passengers injured or even dead. If you or a loved one has been involved in a bus or motorcoach accident, we may be able to help you seek compensation for your losses.

Vehicle maintenance and driver fatigue were found to be the major causes of bus and motorcoach accidents in a 1999 National Transportation Safety Board "NTSB" Highway Special Investigation Report. However, as traffic congestion continues to escalate, highway design and infrastructure could become a possible or even probable cause in bus and motorcoach accidents.

The NTSB is an independent government agency tasked with determining the probable causes of accidents and promoting transportation safety. It has created a group tasked with publishing a most wanted list that is "...a program to increase the public's awareness of, and support for, action to adopt safety steps that can help prevent accidents and save lives."

Some of the Federal issues included on NTSB "Most Wanted List" are:
  • Improve the Safety of Motor Carrier Operations
  • Prevent Medically Unqualified Drivers from Operating Commercial Vehicles
  • Enhance Protection for Motorcoach Passengers
  • Enhance Protection for School Bus Passengers
